Self-Management for Artists: Presenting Your Artwork Professionally

Marlene Creates has been an independent visual artist for over 40 years. Her work has been presented in over 350 exhibitions and screenings across Canada and internationally. She has led professional development workshops for artists across the province through VANL-CARFAC, and she mentored two artists on self-management through Eastern Edge Gallery. She received a Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts and she was invested into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador for her contribution to the province as an environmental artist and an educator, and for her volunteer community work.

The topics to be covered include:

  • Submissions to art galleries

  • Formatting your CV (bring yours if you have one)

  • Writing artist statements

  • Documenting your work, artist-initiated exhibitions, record keeping, gallery-artist contracts, CARFAC national fee schedule for copyright, reproduction rights, exhibition fees, and other public presentations of your work.

Participants are asked to bring their current CV and an artist statement about their work in general or about a specific body of completed work. HOWEVER, if you don’t have one, please don’t let that get in the way of attending because you will be learning how to create one!
